Thracian astronomical observatory - Staro Zhelezare village

It is located in the village of St. Zhelezare — 12 km from the town of Hisar. This is the only Thracian astronomical observatory discovered so far in Bulgaria, of the Stonehenge type. Archaeological-astronomical studies prove that it was used to measure the annual cycle, the equinoxes and the solstice, which played an important role in the ritual and economic calendar of the ancient Thracians. Observing the different phases of the movement of the God – Sun was the duty of the Thracian priests. And all the others paid homage to him through mass mystery rites.
